Handcrafted Light Fixtures
Sandwich Lantern has been handcrafting colonial lighting fixtures since 1988.
History of the Lanterns
Original colonial fixtures before Paul Revere developed copper production in America were made of tin. They looked good, but they unfortunately did not survive long in the New England climate. “Glass” was limited to either eisenglass (mica) found locally or lanthrone—transparent panels made from the finely shaved horns of farm animals. Needless to say, these did not much give off much light from a candle!
Today we use solid copper and solid brass materials that will stand the test of time. Impervious to salt air and harsh envirnoments they weather gracefully never needing maintenance or attention.
