My idea is simple: art and architecture must work together as they are flip sides of the same coin. Each enhances the other: for a building to succeed the internal search of the artist must be combined with the exigencies that define architecture. These include budget, program, site, scale, materials, regulatory requirements and historical context. This union is the essence of what is meant by Masterbuilder. In addition, the Masterbuilder must also be a student and critic -- of the architecture and the buildings of the time.
I believe that I must always create work reflective of my moment in time, eschewing false historical models. It is essential that, as an architect, I combine the materials and methods of my times with the timelessness of proper scale, massing, and context, while never being fearful of playful aspects characteristic of great architecture. Finally, technology, particularly the CADD systems, has provided architects today with a tremendously useful tool for both conceiving a design as well as truly understanding that design as it proceeds. We take full advantage of these and related technologies.
