Thomas H. Atkinson III, DMD, of Northampton, MA died suddenly on April 4, 2005, at the age of 45. He was the son of the late Thomas H. Atkinson, Jr. and Marjorie Jean Robb Atkinson of Weston / Westport, CT.
Dr. Tom, as he was affectionately known, was a 1978 graduate of The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, CT, a 1982 graduate of Trinity College in Hartford, CT, and a 1988 graduate of the UConn School of Dental Medicine, which he followed with a general dentistry residency at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. Tom and his wife of 17 years have successfully run a general dental practice in Northampton since 1989. Tom excelled in all areas of dentistry, and was especially regarded for his deep caring of patients and staff, as well as his outstanding ability to make every person he came into contact with feel special.
Tom was an avid photographer, an automotive enthusiast, an audiophile, and loved to play tennis and golf. He was extremely active in various duties at St. Mary's Church, and a recent youth soccer coach. He was past president of the Hampshire Dental Society, member of the American Dental Association, the Valley District Dental Society, Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity and the Academy of Laser Dentistry.
He leaves a loving family including his wife, Michele (nee Naklicki), his daughter, Emily, and son, Thomas Reid. He is also survived by his brother, Robb, of Knoxville, TN, and sisters, Margaret Gooch of Wilmington, NC and Amanda Shea, of Norwalk, CT.
A viewing service was conducted on Friday, April 8th from 3:00 - 8:00PM at Ahearn's Funeral Home, 784 Bridge Road, Northampton, and the funeral service was held on Saturday, April 9th, at 10:30AM at St. Mary's Church, 3 Elm Street, Northampton.
